DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Celebrates 8th Year of Dance DC Festival

Hip-hop dance highlighted with high-profile performances throughout the city

Washington, D.C. – From July 22-24, 2011, The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities will host its 8th annual Dance DC Festival – a festival which highlights the folk traditions of the world through live music and dance. The events will be at various locations throughout the city and are FREE and open to the public. This year, the Commission will celebrate the many styles of hip-hop and its influences on other cultures around the world.

“We are highlighting hip-hop as a true American folk art and it’s influences on the world – not just commercially, ” says Ayris Scales, Interim Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

Beginning Friday, July 22nd, the festival kicks off with Simply Marvin: Live at the Sugar Shack, at the Warner Theatre, 513 13th Street, NW. The opening, a tribute to D.C. native, Marvin Gaye, will feature performances by singers Eric Roberson, Levi Stephens and acclaimed violinist, Miri Ben-Ari, as well as several dance performers.

A workshop series to include several dance forms and the art of DJing, as well as a film screening of the 80s classic film, Style Wars will be on Saturday, the 23rd at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

The closing event, Downtown Battleground, will take place Sunday July 24th on F Street, NW between 7th and 9th Streets. The Downtown Battleground, a all around block party, will feature hip-hop legend, Doug E.
